The mandolin is a stringed instrument in the lute family. It is traditionally with 8 strings, in 4 pairs, and is tuned the same as a violin. Mandolins are normally played with a pick. it was tradtionally used in european music, for example in italy, before finding its place in folk music of Ireland, and later in the united States, where it is used extensively in country and bluegrass styles. 

Variations of the mandolin include mandola, triolin, resonator mandolins, banjolins and more. Solid-bodied electric mandolins are also available in 4, 5 or 8 string combinations.
