GJ guitars
GJ guitars is the brand name given to our own in house made guitars from Kinellar Guitar Studios, a small repair/ luthier business based in Blackburn, Aberdeen Scotland
(est. 1980).

Although some of our builds are commission based, we still sell a few instruments at knock down/ cost prices in house and on line. We are always experimenting with different woods, finishes and electrics and even if there is no money to be made from these sales, we simply want to prove that pound for pound our hand made guitars are much better than the "big named” mass produced models.

There are 3 model ranges ….

The “Tyree” – A single cut, with a bolt on neck guitar (Tele).

The “Scultie” – A double cut, with a bolt on neck guitar (Strat).

The “Brimmond” – All our set neck instruments.

We also use the trade name of “Allt Dubh” for our range of hand wound pickups. Used by many local musicians and a special Telecaster bridge pickup used and endorsed by Baz Warne of The Stranglers. All are designed and hand wound in my home in Blackburn.

GJ guitars #37

This instrument, a "Scultie" is hand crafted from scratch by myself here in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This build was completed after approximately 4 months and has one of the nicest veneer tops I have done to date.

The body has been cut from 2 piece American Alder wood with a AAA quilted maple veneer (purchased from Washburn U.S.A.), stained Amber and then a Cellulose finish applied by my painter. This has a great looking gloss finish, allowing the grain to show itself at its best. The instrument body is quite light with open grains allowing great sustain and the tones to ring through.

The neck has been hand cut from North American maple with an Indian rosewood finger board. There are 22 vintage sized frets (levelled, dressed & polished) on the fretboard and a truss rod that is adjustable from the headstock. The neck has been finished with amber nitro-cellulose lacquer. This offers a great satin finish and should not feel sticky during a gig. The neck is 'C/D' shaped (GJ special) with a 12 inch radius, which is great for string bending without the risk of choking out. The nut is synthetic bone. White dot inlays have been fitted to the fretboard and top edge along with 2 butterfly string trees and Schaller style tuners. The neck is attached to the body via a 4 screw hole gold plate.

Pickups - Neck and Middle and bridge are a matched set of Tonerider Blues with black covers.

This is what Tonerider have to say regarding this model range. A punchy set that retains vintage clarity. Thicker, hotter and spankier! Our Classic Blues set offers classic late 60s tones, voiced for a faster attack on single note lines. Now wound with grey Forbon flatwork for a true 60's look and feel! Tone Guide: Fast attack, great balance, smoother than our Pure Vintage set. Resistance: 6.1k neck, 6.5k mid, 7.0k bridge. Magnets: Alnico V in Modified Vintage Stagger RWRP for hum-cancelling in notch positions

The output of all three is similar to a "hot-ish vintage". In other words you can achieve that vintage 60's sound to anything from the modern day. These pickups can handle just about anything you may wish to throw at them from Country to Rock, or Jazz to Blues.

Controls - 250k pots all round (Volume, Tone for Middle & Tone for Neck), .022k caps on both tone pots and a treble bleed on the volume pot. A standard 5 way switch and a micro switch to add the neck pickup in positions 1 & 2. Giving you 7 pickup selections rather than the normal 5.

A gold finish vintage style tremolo system with vintage saddles and a short screw in arm have been fitted and counter balanced by up to 3 springs to the claw on the underside. The scratch plate is a "Cat Fur" pattern with a matching back plate.

Schaller style strap locks have been fitted.

Strings - 0.009 to 0.042 gauge - D'Addario

Extras - GJ guitars Certificate of Authentication, soft guitar bag.

This is a stunning looking and an easy to play instrument with a good action. The variety of tones are exceptional and she sounds really great, with loads of sustain. You will be hard pushed to find another instrument that offers this build and sound quality at this price.
