Handpans - Musik für die Seele
Vielleicht hast du sie schon einmal bei Straßenkünstlern oder in einem "Weltmusik" Ensemble gesehen. Die Handpan ist ein relativ neues Instrument, das in den letzten Jahren eine große Fangemeinde gewonnen hat. In diesem Artikel möchte ich ein wenig über den Hintergrund der Handpan und deren Spielweise erläutern und einen kurzen Überblick über den heutigen Markt liefern für diejenigen, die sich für den Kauf eines dieser wundervollen Instrumente interessieren.

Was ist eine Handpan?
Die ersten Handpans wurden von der Schweizer Firma PANArt zwischen 2000 und 2013 gebaut. Als PANArt den Begriff Hang, im Bernerdeutschen "Hand" - als Markenzeichen für ihre eigenen Instrumente - registrierte, wurde der Name Handpan populär.

Ein Handpan ist ein Rundinstrument aus zwei zusammengeklebten Stahlhalbkugeln, das, wie der Name schon sagt, mit den Händen gespielt wird.
Handpans sind nicht-chromatische Instrumente, was bedeutet, dass sie nicht alle 12 aufeinander folgenden Noten einer Tonleiter haben, wie dies beispielsweise bei einem Klavier der Fall ist. Stattdessen sind sie auf verschiedene Skalen und Noten vorgestimmt. Um ihren typischen harmonischen Klang beizubehalten, gehören die Noten eines Handpanels jedoch alle zu derselben Skala, auch wenn Sie normalerweise nicht jede Note dieser Skala auf dem Handpan finden. Aus diesem Grund klingt das Handpan-Spiel immer angenehm, egal wo Sie auf dem Instrument spielen.
Handpans variieren jedoch nicht nur stark in der Tonlage, auf die sie abgestimmt sind, und in den Noten, die auf ihnen gespielt werden können. Sogar die Anzahl der Noten unterscheidet sich. Normalerweise werden sieben oder acht Noten auf die Klangfelder abgestimmt, welche den tone circle der Handpan bilden. Darüber hinaus haben das Ding, welches die Grundnote (und die niedrigste Note) darstellt, auf der Kuppel in der Mitte des Instruments gespielt und normalerweise nach außen gebeult.
Obwohl es eine große Auswahl an Skalen gibt, sind die kleineren und speziell östlich klingenden Skalen am beliebtesten.
Wie wird die Handpan gespielt?

One of the particularities of this instrument is that you can tap it anywhere, and it will create a sound, not just on the sound fields (tuned areas), but all around them, as well as on the backside and over the Gu – the circular opening in the bottom of the instrument.
There are many different ways of creating sound on a handpan. The usual way is by tapping it with the tip of a finger, but you can also use the knuckles, the fist, the inner part of the wrist or even a swiping movement of the hand. One can even play with a certain note by using the hollowed hand to manipulate the sound waves. A kind of vibrato can be created by playing a tone and then swiftly moving the hand over the respective tone field. Even a synthesizer-like electronic snare can be produced by playing a tone and then immediately 'closing it' by covering the sound with your hand.
Incorporating all of these moves and touches makes for a very diverse eclectic sound.
Today's handpan market
Nowadays there are about 150 handpan luthiers who manufacture instruments of different materials, sounds and quality.
In addition to offering different scales and notes, every 'tuner' has their own style. This means that the note might be exactly the same, but the sound can still be different. As a result you should first choose the scale that you would like and then give it a good listen and, if possible, play the handpan yourself before you make your final decision.
The price depends on several factors, like the scale, material and amount of notes, but in general ranges from 1.000 to 3.000 Euros per handpan. But remember to have some patience – handpans are generally crafted by hand and a lot of attention goes into making them. You will usually encounter a waiting list which can be several months or even years long. Alternatively you could check for an available new or used one on Bbop.
