Cigarbox Guitars

Although not a brand in particular, Cigarbox guitars have sculpted their position in music history. Their roots are founded back as far as the mid-1850s, however they really began to pick up in the early days of blues music among the black, slave communities of America. This was due to their poverty meaning that they could not afford to buy a 'real' guitar. The Cigarbox guitar was often accompanied by the 'Washboard', the 'Jug', Washtub Bass and the harmonica.

The Cigarbox Revival

In recent years there has been a huge revival of Cigarbox guitars. This has resulted in more and more well known brands adding a Cigarbox alternative to their current guitar inventory.

Current artists who play Cigarbox guitars include:

  • Frank Turner
  • Ed King of Lynard Skynard
  • Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top
